Walks in Yorkshire Dales
From circular walks to finding waterfalls to hikes with a local country pub at the end and an array of cafes along the way, the Yorkshire Dales has something for everyone and all abilities.
For example:
Muker – a landscape from the late 18th century, Muker is an iconic feature of the Dales. With field barns, drystone walls, and rich hay meadows that offer a vibrancy of colour, this 7-mile circular route is rated as moderate and takes approximately 4 hours.
Malham Tarn – a short, easy-to-moderate walk; if you’re thinking about hiking in the Yorkshire Dales, this could be the walk for you. Take a walk beneath the cliffs of Great Close Scar, wander through thick forest and peatland, and take in the beauty of the natural surrounding lakes. Standing at 377 metres above sea level, Malham Tarn is one of Britain’s highest lime-rich mud lakes.
Keld to Tan Hill Inn – a historic landmark set high in the Yorkshire Dales; think of exposed beams, stone floors, and a welcoming ambiance as you walk through the doors of the Inn of the highest public house in Britain. A popular stop for walkers to meet and share stories, take the 10.6-metre walk from Keld to the head of Arkengarthdale to really put your feet to the test.
Skipton Castle – at over 900 years old, this Grade I listed building is one of the most significant and well-preserved medieval castles you will come across.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden Park in Ripon – registered as a world heritage site, Fountains Abbey is one of England’s largest and best-preserved Cistercian monastery ruins. With Georgian gardens and a sprawling deer park, this is a great walk to take in nature at its finest.
Gaping Gill – the largest underground cave chamber in Britain, Gaping Gill can be found on the Southern slopes of Ingleborough, but are you brave enough to head 98 metres underground?
Pen-y-Ghent Hike – approximately 6.3 miles and taking a little over 2 hours, Pen-y-Ghent is one of the peaks of the three peaks challenge. A scramble to the top, maybe, but an opportunity to see spectacular views, absolutely. If your feet can handle a small detour, visit
Hull Pot close by, the largest natural hole in England.
Hardraw force walk – a 4-mile walk leading you to England’s largest single-drop waterfall. The land in this area is privately owned, so you will have to pay to access the site.
Burnsall to Grassington trail – a pretty walk along the river, with stepping stones, suspension bridges, and sweeping views of the Dales, this is by far one of the best walks in Yorkshire Dales. Passing by the lovely Linton Falls, watch as you see waterfalls gushing and cascading over rocks and landscaping.
Reeth round – the Reeth circular walk is 2.8 miles long, circulating around rivers and bridges, allowing you to take in the sights and tranquillity of the small village of Reeth.
Old gang-smelt mill walk – a gravely type path for the feet to handle, walk the 5.8 miles around the moor hills, through ruins, old mining buildings, and across bridges and rivers.
