Fungal nail and skin infections are notoriously hard to shift. When warm weather calls for open shoes and bare feet, fungus can take its chance to strike!
At Kin Body & Sole, we believe strongly in proactive foot care. Prevention is always better than cure, and summer brings with it increased exposure to environments where fungal infections thrive. With the right knowledge and a few simple precautions, you can enjoy the season without worrying about your feet.
Why Summer Increases Your Risk
During the warmer months, our feet encounter more public communal spaces—think swimming pools, hotel bathrooms, gyms, and changing rooms. These areas offer the perfect breeding ground for fungus: warmth, moisture, and low light.
The culprit is often the same fungus responsible for Athlete’s Foot. It lingers on hard surfaces, waiting for bare feet to step in and pick it up. Once it takes hold, fungal infections can affect both the skin and nails, becoming harder to treat the longer they go unnoticed.
Eight Ways to Reduce Your Risk This Summer
- Wear footwear in communal areas
Use flip-flops, sliders or crocs to keep your feet off damp, shared surfaces. - Wash and dry your feet properly
Make sure feet are clean and completely dry before wearing socks or shoes. - Choose open shoes when possible
Exposure to light and air helps keep fungus at bay. - Limit nail polish use
Give your toenails breaks between applications. Trapped moisture and chemicals can weaken the nail and promote fungal growth. - Opt for breathable fabrics
Cotton socks and shoes that allow air circulation can help prevent moisture buildup. - Air out your athletic footwear
After exercising, leave shoes in a well-ventilated space to fully dry before next use. - Wash socks and shoes effectively
Clean them at 60 degrees and dry thoroughly to eliminate sweat and fungal spores.
